“Bob S” has an amazing ability. He can judge a person’s soundness as a parent based on only a few minutes of watching your child in a supermarket.

He was at the local Hannaford when he saw this unfolding scandal:

I just got back from Hannafords. A guy with a young overweight girl sitting in the cart, about the right age for kindergarten, was playing video games on an ipad. My grandson informed me that she was playing “angry birds.” Hardly an educational use of the ipad, and it isn’t helping the little girls health either.

Thanks, Bob, for your contributions to backseat parenting. I’m sure your kids are perfect, they surely aren’t fat, because you make them do sprints up and down the aisles while you shop for whole wheats and kale. Oh wait, the Obamas like kale- better exchange that for some all-American 25% fat hamburger meat. Close call.

Now, I’m not saying it is wrong to think that an overweight child should, maybe, be a bit more active. But for crying out loud, they are in a supermarket. Sometimes the parent just wants to get in and out. And seriously, if the kid had been reading “Atlas Shrugged” she wouldn’t have been getting any exercise either, except maybe some diaphragm stretching trying to repress the urge to vomit all over the pages. But Bob S would be handing out parenting gold stars if he saw that going down.

Here is the point: Bob, you have no idea what the hell is going on in that kid’s life, or her parent’s. Maybe she is playing angry birds because she cleaned her fucking room today, so she gets a half-hour playing a video game with cute birds and pigs. Oh, the humanity!

Or maybe her Dad takes her home and ties her down like a young calf, and force feeds her grain and milk through a tube. I’d object to that, but if anyone tried to give her a healthy lunch at school Bob would start bitching about the “nanny state.” You just can’t win with some people.

Either way, Bob has no reason to make any judgments at all. All he saw was a young child in 2012 playing a cute video game. That is all. News flash: I’m pretty sure the guys that built Google played a few pointless video games in their lives. They turned out okay overall, even if they lose a few points on the Conservative Guide To Your Entire Fucking Life Official Scorecard because Google occasionally tries to put up a few wind turbines here and there.

Bob even had to take it one step past simple judgmental bullshit; he had to bring taxes into the argument.

Hopefully, it wasn’t one of the taxpayer provided ipads. I would hate to think that we were contributing to the demise of this young girl.

Her demise? Bob has known of this person’s existence for all of sixty seconds, and he already knows that her life is, for all intents and purposes, over. He is thinking to himself, I bought that fat little fuck’s iPad, even though I doubt Bob contributed more than a dime to it, if that. I’m pretty sure they don’t let kindergardeners take the iPads home. They are classroom tools.

The final word: I’d rather have my kid grow up to be an Apple programmer than a judgmental, vindictive, and close-minded asshole like Bob S.

Maybe my kid will invent “Angry Republicans,” a game where you toss Santorums (the person, not the sexual byproduct) and Gingriches at welfare queens hiding in subsidized housing. When you win, the screen says, “Good job, you slut.” I think that would be a big seller.

I know I shouldn’t take it seriously. My Mom taught me to never, ever take anything seriously when it is said by a person who voluntarily goes by the name “Vikingstar.” But here it is.

Vikingstar ponders when the hordes of liberal posters will begin showering AMG with their heresy because it is an election year. He surmises that they aren’t here yet because the Democratic machine isn’t yet paying them money to “astroturf” AMG.

If Democrats are paying anyone to post anything on AMG, we are screwed. There could not be a more stupid way to spend kindly donated money.

Does Vikingstar think the great masses of Maine come to AMG for unbiased, open discussion, and might be swayed by some planted users saying things like, “Gee, I don’t know. I kind of like Angus King,” or, “Actually I sometimes listen to MPBN and like it?”

No. No one is coming to AMG with an open mind. They come either to laugh or, thank goodness for my blog, kindly provide fodder for the people who came to laugh. There is only a slight space in between those two options, and his name is Dan Billings and he is on AMG sabbatical right now.

Seriously, how paranoid do you have to be to think Democrats want to pay people to write stuff on AMG. My goodness. But I guess compared to the recent “Democrats want to use secret sterility pills to control the world” thread, Vikingstar is being pretty tame.

These people are fricking nuts.

LD 849 is a genius piece of political posturing.

The news reports on this bill, which passed the Senate yesterday, simply say that Republicans voted to “reduce the income tax rate to 4%.” Looks great! They got the headline they wanted. No further explanation given or required.

But what the bill actually does is only slightly better than nothing. It does nothing in terms of taxes people actually pay, but creates a nice baseline for future Republicans to compare all budgets to.

The bill, technically, creates a new “fund,” into which goes any extra, leftover money the state has after all it’s general commitments are paid. Some of that is then doled out into the budget to reduce tax rates until the top rate is 4%.

The original bill only lowered the top rate to 6.5%, but that lacked the panache necessary to really excite the unsophisticated Republican voters whose buttons are meant to be pressed by this headline, so they lowered it to 4%. That is apparently the poll tested number that LePage voters find most exciting but still believable.

How does this help future Republicans? Consider that state revenues are unusually low, given the recession. Understand that these revenues will go up substantially in the next few years, even if the actual tax rates do not. Also understand that there are a lot of costs the state is deferring at the moment, costs that are being pushed ahead into future budget years in order to stop an immediate tax rate increase to make up for the current, temporary revenue decrease.

So if 2013 rolls around and Democrats are in charge of writing the budget again, the Republicans know the new legislature will do what Democratic-controlled bodies always seem to do in the current millennium: craft a moderate budget that keeps the lights on and even fixes a few potholes, literally and metaphorically.

And Republicans will jump out from behind a tree screaming, “Democrats are increasing taxes 200%! They want to double your taxes!”

How? Because the current tax rate is 8.5%, heading down to just under 8% in a year or two. And Republicans will look at the next budget and calculate the relative tax rates compared to their mythical 4% they passed but never implemented. And eight is twice as high as four!

The 4% rate is mythical because the tax rate would only reach that low if spending did not increase at all from these historical lows, and revenues skyrocket in a good economy. But of course spending will increase because the government has been putting off lots of general housekeeping and upkeep- the sort of stuff that can be let go for a few years unnoticed before people start complaining.

Oh, and spending will go up modestly even without paying all those deferred costs, as always, because of inflation.

Yet Republicans will calculate a tax increase as what Democrats propose in their responsible budget versus their hypothetical baseline that could never, ever, actually happen. They will determine that we would all have been paying 4% by 2020 if we had just held the line on spending, and therefore that Democrats want to double your taxes.

This is the beauty of the Republican party- moderation and reality mean nothing. They will make this claim of a potential doubling of taxes even though the top rate in effect is, will be, and always was somewhere over 7.9 percent at all relevant times. And they can’t actually propose a budget with a 4% tax rate, because that would lead to all kinds of nasty news stories about what they cut to make the numbers work. That is the beautiful thing about this bill: you don’t have to cut any spending if your tax cuts are imaginary!

So when the Democrats propose a budget generally like the last one, but with a modest spending increase over historic lows, Tea Party types will jump and scream because they won’t realize that the 4% rate was impossible all along.

The tax cut in this bill is completely useless as a piece of responsible, honest governing. It is fiction.

This bill’s only use is as a talking point in 2014. And it is only a useful talking point if Republicans aren’t actually in charge of the budget- because otherwise they would be the ones raising taxes when they continue to fund everything at or about historical levels, with inflation added in, thus continuing the endless cycle of small, continuous budget increases. Their decision to pass this bill shows that they are already hedging against losing the legislature.

They know they probably won’t be in charge, so they can put these little talking-point bombs into the system.

And if they somehow maintain control of the legislature, we will not hear of this 4% number ever again. They will lower the 7.9% rate to 7.6%, or something like that, and talk about how historic that is. The 4% baseline is only meant for attacking others. No Republican will ever be held to it.

Cynical? Yep. Politically smart? Sure, if you plan on losing the legislature sometime soon.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this tactic is happening in other states controlled by radical Republican majorities in usually un-radical states. It makes a lot of sense, tactically.

Did you know you can comment on the Maine GOP website?

It is moderated, unfortunately, so no one is ever likely to see what you write, but if you wish to vent your anger at the absurdity of the modern Republican party you could, say, go to the list of State Committee members and write a comment like this:

It may be of interest to some readers that Committee member Roger Ek, Penobscot County, opposes the President’s compromise on ensuring access to birth control because, Roger notes, woman have had access to fish bladder condoms for thousands of years and can have an abortion anytime they want by jamming a stick into their uterus.

I’m not making this up.

http://www.asmainegoes.com/content/contraceptives-issue#comment-626457

Will it ever see the light? Who knows. But I found it a useful release in a moment of Roger Ek inspired annoyance.

On birth control, “johnw” is somehow the voice of reason.

I haven’t written about johnw before, because he is so incredibly dull. He posts long Ron Paul-enque rants that even people like me can’t go through without our eyes rolling into the back of our heads. But somehow, on birth control, he is concise and logical.

Here is what he says:

I work in an office where there are 30+ women….. some of them pretty darn conservative.
The prevailing attitude is why shouldn’t insurance pay for birth control if they choose to use it whether you agree with it or not.
These women vote , they pay for insurance and they believe that they should receive services they deem necessary……I had one standing in front of my desk yesterday telling me if our insurance policy pays for Viagra….. a drug that helps get women pregnant it sure as hell should pay for things that prevent it…… .

Other AMGers, however, they’ve still got the crazy flowing uninterrupted. Here are some of my favorites:

Maine State Republican Party Committee member Roger Ek:

Contraception has been around for thousands of years. Air bladders from fish were used back then as condoms and an old lady with a stick was used to perform abortions. The issue today is whether citizens’ tax dollars should be used to pay for these products and services.

Let me say that I am wholeheartedly in agreement with Roger in standing against taxpayer subsidies for fish bladders. And ‘old lady with a stick’ abortions. One-hundred percent with you there, Roger.

And then there is the resident conspiracy theorist, Mackenzie Andersen:

Extrapolating into the future as we continue down the course we are headed:

Phase One: in order to advance its population control agenda, the authoritarian totalitarian government issues free contraceptives.

Phase Two: The contraceptives that the government is issuing are revealed to be sterility pills. If one wants to conceive, one must get the antidote pill but to get that one must apply to the government for permission
.
Phase Three: New “advances’ in genetic engineering are made.

Phase Four: Genetic engineering mandates.

Wow. Phase Two is a plot twist I’d expect on the sci-fi channel at 2 a.m. I like where you’re going with this, Mackenzie. Put it in 45 pages of script form and I’ll see what the network brass thinks.

And finally, more Mackenzie. Doubling down.

I know the opening scenario sounds like it couldn’t happen here but as the second post in this discussion brought up- it is consistent with the views oi some of Obama czars, who ill continue to hold power if Obama is re-elected. These czars have already expressed a belief in public sterilization as a solution to the population problem. Science is always discovering unknown side affects of new drugs. Sterilization could be marketed as an either unknown side effect or an accidental contamination of the drugs- at least in the first phase of phase two, The antidote could be said to be in short supply and so must be regulated by the government.

Yes I know it sounds unlikely but so did everything that is happening today seem unlikely a short four years ago,

First of all, birth control is not a new drug. Well, unless you are on the Roger Ek geologic timescale, comparing hormonal pills to fish bladders, but you get my point. Five decades is not a short time.

Second, what a complete moron. The woman, Sandra Fluke, who testified and set off the whole Rush Limbaugh “slut” debacle was not talking about sex. She told the story of a woman who needed hormonal birth control pills not for birth control, but to prevent a progressive loss of fertility and the eventual disabling of one of her ovaries. She wanted to prevent sterility. She wanted what civilized people might call medicine. But she couldn’t get it, because the Affordable Care Act didn’t exist. Soon, people with her problem will not have to lose their fertility because of idiots like you, Mackenzie.

AMGer IAC says “My bank asked me some strange questions today.” She (I think) went on to express fear about how much her bank knew about where she lives, the car she drives, etc. These questions were in response to her experience logging in to her bank’s website. ”I have spent the last few hours feeling … violated.”

Now, funny enough, the exact same thing happened to me the other day, only without the paranoia. I was using a different computer to access my bank accounts and, sure enough, there was a battery of questions designed to determine if I was who I claimed to be. I didn’t blink an eyelash. I figured it’s what the bank does to protect my identity and I was glad of it.

But not IAC and the other AMGers. Though some explained the reason and legitimacy of the process, others thought it a good idea to call the bank or, worse yet, change banks.

This explains a lot about the mindset of these kooks, at least in my mind.

Is he joking? Maybe, but sketchy half-truths and innuendo never stopped a Republican “investigation” of voter fraud before.

Someone call Secretary of State Charlie Summers, stat!

I’d also say someone should call Charlie Webster, but I worry he wouldn’t understand. Because he’s a little slow.

Here is what taxfoe said:

Washington has some pretty restrictive rules about party affiliation/registration and voting. I don’t recall the specifics but it does take some advance planning to vote. After voting in WA in the morning, business took me to the substantially less restrictive Nevada where I ran into a get-out-the-vote brigade near the hotel I was staying. I took one look at the angel on my left shoulder and one look at the angel on my right shoulder. Only the angels know for sure.

For one of my last elections in Maine, I went in to vote (Portland) and, as my name was being checked off the list, I noticed my dead brother’s name was still on it as was that of a brother currently residing in Oklahoma. I didn’t want to push my luck so only two of us voted that day. I used a laundry receipt to establish my ID as the other. I checked in with the clerk A, voted, walked out, came back in, checked in with the other clerk B who, in keeping with her alphabetic duties, told A which name to cross off and I voted again. I didn’t know her personally but she knew my family and did what, I’m sure she fealt, was the best thing, given our recent tragedy.

At first I was going to comment on this PPH thread in either the never-ending thread on Naran or on my thread about sanitizing AMG. But this is just so rich in information and Naranisms that I just had to post it here, edited for conciseness by removing off-topic posts. Gerald and I both suggest Naran might be lying. Our comments were independent; I didn’t see his comment before my post and vice-versa.

What is also interesting is the discourse about what it takes to be accorded the honor of being able to post on AMG.

So I hope you all enjoy this rather long missive. Great way to pass some time waiting for the Super Bowl. (Go Pats!) (P.S. Guess I should have been more specific about them going for the end zone.)

You’re mixing two different scandals. This story regards the request from Rep. Mark Dion to the AG’s office to determine if Poliquin had violated the Maine Constitution by participating in his Beach Club business in Phippsburg.

The other that you mention is how Poliquin placed 10.3 acres of his 12.3 acres estate in Georgetown in the Maine Tree Growth tax reduction program

Funny, [Naran,] but in the past when a post like yours comes up, you usually respond by saying something snarky like, “May I remind you that Gerald does not hold the post of Treasure of the State of Maine! Go away before I beat you with my wooden spoon!”

I guess it’s different when a Republican gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

No difference – as I’ve written before on this issue, if Poliquin is found guilty of violating either the Maine Constitution or the Maine Ethics rules, he should take his punishment and own up. If that means a fine, or resignation, so be it. Whatever the penalty is — he should and will take responsibility.

Meanwhile, your petty grousing over being banned from AMG is equal only to Gerald’s. You guys should start a club.

So why do you find it necessary to call for the release of Gerald’s financial statements? This is just another example of your constant deflection efforts and your unequal treatment of public scandals.

I didn’t mention anything about AMG or banning. Could it be you’re feeling guilty about stiffling honest dialogue? Could be, since you’re so poor at it yourself.

You are either lying or ignorant. I posted a link to a story about Michael Pajak that had been posted by two other sources. The owner of AMG, Scott Fish, let Pajak’s hateful rants against gays and Muslims up for months after his posts were disclosed. You nor Scott ever condemned his writing.

AsMaineGoesLOLZ has it all documented:

http://asmainegoeslolz.com/the…

Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from hate speech. That doesn’t mean it can’t and shouldn’t be challenged. You didn’t do that Naran. You sat back and let it go.

But when I pointed to a story at another news source about the author of this hate-speech (Scott knew who he was, of course), I was banned. That’s how it works at AMG: posting hate speech is tolerated, actually calling someone out on it is not.

BS, Gerald. You were banned by Scott, who made the decision because you outed an anonymous member. As you mentioned, it wasn’t the first time you’d been blocked, but it was the last.

You’re still just making up petty gripes because you don’t like being excluded from the forum.

I’m not sure [why I was banned], Gerald. Either it was quoting an opinion I found on www.asmainegoeslolz.com (anathema to Naran) or it was criticism of LePage, particularly his bedside manner and the way the color of that stupid “Open for Business” sign didn’t even match a standard state sign and had to be made in Texas instead of here in Maine.

Whatever, since Naran has weeded the conservative garden and rid it of annoying left-leaning pests, the site has become a right-wing echo chamber with little debate of any substance, other than arguing about who is more conservative.

No — you were banned by Scott for disregarding specific requests repeatedly made by him, not me. Scott Fish blocked you.

Rudeness and a refusal to do as requested when it’s been repeatedly asked is generally unproductive.

Naran, you are either thinking of one of the many other banned posters or you are lying.

I received one, just one, complaint from Scott Fish regarding my posting of a cartoon that included the offensive (to him) word “shit” for which I apologized. That was several years ago.

As a stranger in a strange land, I always tried to remain civil and respectful of others — something that your heroes on AMG certainly failed to do, branding me as a Nazi sympathizer, ignorant, stupid, and “BelowAverageJoe.” They went so far as to tell me my lesbian daughter and her child were bound for Hell.

Prior to my unexpected banning, there was no directive to me from Scott Fish, you, or anyone else regarding unacceptable posting. I was not rude. Certainly not as rude as our governor. Clearly, my banning was solely for idealogical (read suppresive) reasons.

Do you contend that rudeness and refusal to obey orders are behind your and Scott Fish’s pogram to sanitize As Maine Goes by banning any number of people with dissenting opinions?

All you have accomplished is the alienation and further polarization of politically aware people and the creation of a truly boring website. www.asmainegoeslolz.com is far more lively and informative.

“Huh CV I don’t believe I was mentioning any names there. Me thinks you PROTEST TOO MUCH and now that you feel so damn guilty, I read back from when you came into this thread and you really seem very confusing on your statements. Naran knows of what she spaeks as she is very intuned to the goings on in the state when it comes to a lot of the news topics. So when she tells you just to look through the PPH or LST. she knows what she is saying. BTW the BDN also marches to the Dem’s drumbeat too. So my suggestion is, Ya Might want to read the PPH, LST and the BDN back in 2009 and 2010 and I’ll bet you’ll find the stoies she was talking about.”

This one’s get everything!

1. Shakespeare
2. Misspelled words
3. Blatant brown-nosing

Really, does AMG get any better than this?

AMGer “pmconusa” posted a five paragraph exposition on the state of our civilization. It is pretty intense:

What you are witnessing is just the next stop on the road to extinction. If you look around you will see where we are going because others are further along the road and others, like the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Mayans, the Incas and the Romans have already disappeared. We are not satisfied with what nature provides but compete with each other in our gluttony to consume more.

Whoa. That’s heavy. Feel free to sit down and have a cup of dark tea while you ponder the impending extinction of America.

Have you managed to absorb all that yet?

Good, because there is more.

Like it or not the earth’s resources and natures continuing bounty are finite. In order to get what we need and protect what we have we stake out our territory and supposedly provide for its defense by establishing an elite group (government), allow it to make the rules for our protection and go about our merry way assuming that group will be satisfied with just having their needs satisfied but we don’t protect ourselves from the very ones we enabled to protect us.

Oh my god. He’s right. I’m not protecting myself from the very ones I enabled to protect me. How did I not see this before?

While the rest of us go about our merry way using up what nature has provided, the government has taken care of themselves and their friends at our expense. Countries no longer war with each other to get what they want because the price is too high. Instead, their disgruntled inhabitants migrate where the opportunity lies and as long as there is a surplus their encroachment is not suspected until it is too late. In less than two or three generations there will be no more ethnic Russians, in three most of Europe, including the United Kingdom will be governed by Muslims whose themselves or their parents migrated from the middle east or Africa where all but the oil has long been insufficient to sustain their populations.

A world with no more Russians? Holy Shit. Muslims governing Europe? Wow. Sound the alarms.

Wait- will there still be Russian Muslims??

Closer to home you have the story of the American Indian. Not a homogeneous race, but several races scattered all over the North American continent. They were stripped of their property by force or by cunning. They were slaughtered or isolated in enclaves as are the Palestinians today and they will soon die out, or be absorbed to where they no longer have an identity apart.

Those poor American Indians. They are just like the Palestinians, sans rockets.

Okay – sarcasm off. Guess what this weird speech was about? I’m serious, just take a moment to try and guess.

You are never going to believe it. But go on, guess.

No, that’s not it.

Not that either.

Are you ready?

It is about fricking K-Marts closing! I’m serious! K-MART! The Romans, the protectors we enabled who we need protection from, the Palestinians, the Indians, the Russians and the Muslims… All of that is tied together with K-MART closing some fricking stores! I’m not making this up.

The stores are in retreat because their customers, whom they rely on for survival, either don’t have the money to spend, cannot earn it where they are, or have moved to where the work is.
We have one last opportunity for hope and change and it isn’t Obama and the Democrats. Nor is it the Republicans. The rules laid down in the Constitution are sufficient if we put enough teeth in them, get both the President and the Supreme Court out of the legislative business and severely punish legislators who disobey the rules. Then we go after the state governments and do the same.

I’ve read a lot of bullshit Constitutional Ron Paul-esque arguments over the years on AMG, but this one takes the cake. This grown man (or woman) is saying that if we had followed a strict interpretation of the Constitution we wouldn’t have to worry about our local K-Mart closing. And apparently the Russians would be better off too (they might still exist?), but that’s not as important as the goddamn K-MART!

You. Cannot. Make. This. Up.
