What if a plurality of Democratic Primary voters wrote in Angus King as their choice for the senatorial candidacy?
Wouldn’t that take care of a lot of problems and speculation?
Maybe King could be on the ballot twice. Once as the Democrat, again as an independent.
My understanding is that this could not happen, because Maine law requires a person be registered as a member of the party to which he seeks nomination by March 15 in order to qualify as a write-in candidate.
A write-in vote for someone not in the party is wasted.
I would assume King is a registered independent.
For what it is worth, I think King is going to win with flying colors. Democrats will not donate, volunteer, or vote for a weak candidate when King is on the ballot. The Senate is important stuff, and it is too dangerous to let a Republican in there and give them control of the seat for six long years. Pingree, Michaud, and Baldacci voters aren’t stupid. We understand why none of them are running.
Well, then, I’ll suspend my GOTV campaign to write in Angus!
I think Maine also requires that in order to be counted, the person has to have filed a “Declaration of Write-in Candidacy” with the Secretary of State’s office.
