The Weiner Transcripts

Ok, so the transcript between Congressman Weiner and one of his Facebook friends is pretty funny.

Some real cheesy stuff. One great part is when the woman teasingly accuses Weiner of being a “Facebook slut” and he responds with one word:

“Guilty.”

This one is difficult for me, since I’m a Weiner fan….wait, that sounds wrong, what I meant is that from the first time I saw Weiner I’ve been impressed……anyway….the things he said, to women he’d never met, via texts no less, were COLOSSALLY stupid! I tend to think that such gigantic errors in judgement belay a mental defect in people, regardless of party. I’m no prude, I play the vomit scene from “I Love You, Man” whenever I need a laugh, but Weiner’s stuff made me gag, no pun intended. My wife felt it was hypocritical of Repubs to decry his actions since they do not do so of their own, which I agree with. But applying my own standards and comfort levels, I wouldn’t be honest reacting to this any differently than I would if it were a GOP member. It’s just too bad that one of the few Dems in Washington with the balls to stand up to the GOP is also a massive pervert.

Policy wise I love the guy, but doing this while married is bad. Doing it with supporters is terrible.

If a Congressman wanted to do this with women he met in his private life and he was single I would care very little (although you are in total denial if you think you can keep it secret while being a member of Congress). But the way Weiner did it just makes it worse. I think he ought to have resigned.

That’s more or less the gist of my debate with the wife. She brought in Clinton and his scandal and whether that should have forced him to resign. I pointed out that such an indiscretion was more palatable because it was something that fell within the, for lack of a better term, acceptable range of human frailty. Not to mention that much of what took place was left to the imagination. Now had a video surfaced of our Commander-in-Chief committing said act, the story might have ended differently. It’s like spitting at someone as opposed to throwing a punch. Both are terrible, punching does more damage, but for most people spitting is far more degrading. Same thing here, an affair is a terrible betrayal of trust and commitment, but the pics and texts here are way more salacious and repugnant. That coupled with the abject stupidity of doing such things AND clicking ‘send’ without any thought of the possible consequences makes it almost impossible to see him as a trustworthy steward of his constituents.

I agree, if we just read about this but there were no pictures it would be treated differently.

Likewise, if there were pictures of Senator Vitter in bed with a prostitute I doubt he would still be around.

I guess for me, I have to apply my “what if it was one of their guys” double standard rule. And, if it was one of their guys I would be jumping all over his shit and saying, “he’s gotta go.” No matter how much I like his politics, I think it would be best if he just went quietly and let us move on. The last thing I would want to do is get into the old, “well ya but your guy did this” back and forth.
